Technical Stock Screener: How to Combine RSI, MACD, ADX and Volume

A technical screener turns a trading idea into filters and returns only the stocks that pass all of them. The quality of the result depends on which filters you combine. This guide shows how to pick filters from different signal families, set sensible thresholds and avoid the most common screening errors.

Filter from different signal families

Three momentum filters that all use the same closing prices tell you almost the same thing three times. Better scans combine filters that measure different things:

Indicator families and what each measures

MomentumRSIIs price moving strongly, and is it stretched?
Trend directionMACD, moving averagesWhich way is the trend, and did it just turn?
Trend strengthADXIs there a trend at all, or is the market ranging?
ParticipationVolume, relative volumeIs real activity confirming the move?
Price structureDistance from a high or lowWhere is price relative to key levels?

Three example scans

Fresh momentum

RSI + MACD

RSI in a mid-to-high band (momentum present, not exhausted) with a new MACD bullish crossover. Finds trends that are just starting.

Trending with strength

ADX + MA

ADX above a trend threshold with price above its 20 and 50 period averages. Finds established trends rather than sideways noise.

Pullback in an uptrend

MA + RSI

Price above the 50-period average, RSI cooled from overbought, volume drying up on the dip. Finds orderly pullbacks.

Thresholds above are starting points, not rules. Adjust them per timeframe and check how the same scan would have performed on past sessions.

A screening workflow

  1. State the setup in words first, such as "uptrend, cooling momentum, rising volume", then translate each phrase into one filter.
  2. Choose one timeframe for all filters so they describe the same candles.
  3. Add filters one at a time and watch the result count; a scan that returns zero or hundreds of stocks needs adjusting.
  4. Add a liquidity filter so illiquid names do not dominate.
  5. Review every match on its chart before acting; the screener narrows the list, you decide.

A worked example

Start with an idea: a young uptrend with room left. Translate it one filter at a time on the daily timeframe and watch the list shrink:

  1. RSI between 55 and 70: momentum present but not stretched.
  2. Add a bullish MACD crossover within the last two bars: the trend just turned.
  3. Add ADX above 20: confirms a trend exists.
  4. Add volume above 1.5x its 20-day average: participation.
  5. Add price above the 50-period moving average: trend direction.

If the list is empty, loosen the newest filter; if it is long, add a filter from a family not yet used. Then open the charts.

Screening mistakes

  • Redundant filters. Stacking similar indicators shrinks the list without adding evidence.
  • Over-fitting. Thresholds tuned until a past period looks perfect rarely hold on new data.
  • Unfinished candles. A signal that exists mid-candle can vanish at the close; check whether the scan uses completed bars.
  • Ignoring the market. A bullish scan in a falling index produces more failures.

Technical stock screener: frequently asked questions

01How do I screen stocks by RSI and MACD together?

Activate both conditions in one scan, for example RSI between 55 and 70 together with a fresh bullish MACD crossover. The screener then returns only stocks that pass every active condition at once.

02What is the best combination of indicators for a stock screener?

Combine different families: momentum (RSI), trend direction (MACD or moving averages), trend strength (ADX) and volume. Filters that confirm each other from different angles produce fewer false positives than several similar ones.

03Does adding more filters make a screener more accurate?

Not by itself. More filters reduce the number of results, but if they measure the same thing they add no new evidence. Accuracy comes from independent confirmation and chart review.

04Can I screen NSE stocks on intraday timeframes?

Yes. Choose the timeframe that matches your holding period and apply all filters on that same timeframe so the signals describe the same candles.

05Can a stock screener predict which stock will go up?

No. A screener finds stocks that meet conditions you set. It narrows the search, but whether a stock rises depends on factors the filters cannot see, so every result still needs a chart review and a risk plan.
