Wide-Range Up Bar (Range 2x ATR, Close Near High)
A green candle whose high-low range is at least 2x the average true range and which closes in the top 20% of that range. A decisive buying day. Liquid stocks only (Rs 5 Cr+).
About This Scan
A wide-range bar is a candle far bigger than the stock's normal daily movement. When it is green and closes near its high, buyers dominated the whole session. This scan lists NSE stocks whose latest candle has a high-low range of at least twice the average true range (ATR), closes in the top 20% of that range and is green, on Rs 5 Cr of last-session turnover. It finds decisive buying days, often on news or breakouts. The mirror scan is Wide-Range Down Bar. For a no-direction view, see Volatility Expansion.

How To Use This Scan
- •Find the reason: results, news, a gap or a breakout. A wide bar with a catalyst behaves differently from one without.
- •The low of the bar is the usual stop reference, but it is far away, so size the position to it.
- •A wide bar often needs a few days to digest. Look for a tight pause above the bar's midpoint. This scan has not been back-tested for an edge.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ATR?
The average true range, the stock's typical high-low movement per candle. A candle of 2x ATR is twice as big as usual.
Why close in the top 20%?
It means price held near the high, not that it spiked and fell back.
Does it work on intraday charts?
Yes. On intraday intervals the candle is compared with the ATR of that interval, so many more candles qualify.
