The Stars Thesis
Stars studies price, volume and market structure. Start with a valid base, check whether the breakout closed convincingly above resistance, then compare relative strength and trend health. Review extension in both percent and ATR units before treating a strong pattern as an attractive entry.
Weights are heuristics, not a calibrated probability of 2× or 10× returns. Historical testing has not established that higher grades consistently outperform lower grades. Volume indicates activity, not the identity of buyers. A high score can coexist with entry risk.

Empirical determinants of momentum

International evidence links momentum to gradual information arrival and finds stronger momentum in rising, less volatile markets. This supports examining trend context, not a guaranteed breakout rule.

George & Hwang · 2004

The 52-Week High and Momentum Investing

Studies proximity to the 52-week high as a momentum signal. Near-high strength and distance from a sensible entry are different questions.

Momentum Crashes

Momentum strategies can suffer sharp reversals. Our extension and failed-pivot diagnostics make technical risk visible; they do not replicate the paper's crash model.

Technical setup phases

1. Accumulation Base

Price carves a tight horizontal range for 30–90+ sessions while volatility contracts. Drying volume can accompany consolidation; buyer identity cannot be inferred from OHLCV. Screens: Early Base, Coiled & Ready.

2. Volume Spark

Volume expands to 3–5× the 20-day average on candles that close near their highs. These surges indicate unusual activity and need price confirmation. Screen: Volume Spark.

3. Market Structure Shift

Price closes above the pivot (base top / multi-month high), retests it, and begins printing higher highs and higher lows. The sideways market has transitioned into an uptrend. Screens: Fresh Breakouts, Confirmed Structure.

4. Trend Expansion

The stock rides the 10/20 EMA without deep pullbacks — each dip finds buyers in days, not weeks. RSI holds the 60+ zone. Trend persistence can be studied here, but reversals remain possible. Phase: Trend Expansion (the Extended label marks moves that have travelled far from the launch pad).

Understanding the Terms
StarScore

A 0-100 rating of how closely a stock currently matches the technical template. Grade A (strongest technical fit), B (developing setup), C (watchlist), D (not yet a star). The formula blends price structure, volume behaviour, trend health, momentum and relative strength. Weights are heuristic; technical fit and entry risk are displayed separately.

Phase

The detected technical state: Early Base → Accumulation → Coiled & Ready → Breakout Spark → Confirmation → Trend Expansion. Extended flags names that have travelled far above their launch pad.

Base

A multi-week sideways range where price consolidates after a run with changing demand and supply. Base Days is how long it has lasted; Base Range % is its depth.

Pivot

The top of the base — the resistance level a breakout must clear. Dist To Pivot % shows how close price is to it; Ext From Pivot % shows how far above it price has travelled.

RS · 120 sessions

Relative strength: how the stock's return over 120 recorded sessions ranks against the same-session stock universe. It measures past leadership, not future return probability.

Prior Trend %

The percentage rally preceding the base. This distinguishes consolidation after an advance from a base forming in a weak trend.

Vol ×20d / Contraction

Vol ×20d compares today's volume with the preceding 20-session average. Breakout confirmation uses the breakout day's own baseline. Contraction tracks how tightly daily ranges squeezed inside the base before the move.

MA Stack / ADX

MA Stack confirms the bullish alignment of the 20 EMA, 50 SMA and 200 SMA; ADX measures how strong the current trend is.

HH/HL & Max PB %

Higher highs and higher lows since the breakout confirm the market-structure shift. Max PB % is the deepest pullback along the way — shallow dips signal healthy demand.

Gain/BO Days

How many sessions since the pivot broke (BO Days) and how far price has travelled since (Gain Since BO %) These describe the retrospectively detected pattern; they are not returns from a signal recorded and traded in real time.

How to Review a Setup
1

The Post-Breakout Leaders screen shows the most selective, recently-triggered setups; Quality Coil shows names still pressing inside their bases. Compare both to see the full life-cycle.

2

Grades A and B mark the closest matches to the template. Open the chart (View) to see how price sits relative to the pivot, moving averages and volume.

3

Notice names near their 52-week high with high RS Pct — the current six-month leaders of the market.

4

Review extension from both the pivot and 20 EMA. A strong trend may already be far from a practical entry reference.

5

Cross-check the sector filter — two or three leading stocks from the same sector moving together may indicate a shared sector exposure; it is not independent confirmation.

6

Use the date picker to replay past sessions and study how similar setups behaved historically.

Risk Concepts Traders Study (Educational)

Breakout Entries

Textbook breakout literature describes two commonly studied approaches: entering as price clears the pivot on expanding volume, or waiting for the first pullback that holds above it. Each has different trade-offs between confirmation and price — a matter of study and personal strategy, not a recommendation.

Protective Stops

A stop-loss is an order that closes a position at a level you choose. Writers on the subject often discuss levels such as the base low or the most recent higher low as pattern-relevant references — the idea being that a close back inside the base suggests the breakout has failed. Choosing and placing stops is a personal decision.

Position Sizing

A widely taught principle: size any single position so that if the trade hits your stop, the loss stays within a small, pre-decided fraction of capital. Breakouts fail frequently even in strong markets, and surviving failures is what allows compounding. The math of sizing is public knowledge worth learning.

Trailing & Exits

Classic texts on trend-following describe trailing a stop under successively higher lows, or scaling out in parts as the trend extends. These describe how trend traders historically manage positions — they are concepts to study, not instructions from this tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the JustTicks Stars multibagger screener?

Stars scans the available NSE stock universe on daily candles for technical patterns: a long, tight consolidation base (30–90+ sessions of contracting volatility), an unusual volume increase, a breakout above the pivot, and a subsequent sequence of higher highs and higher lows. Every stock gets a 0–100 StarScore that ranks how closely it currently matches this pattern.

How is the StarScore computed?

StarScore blends technical features — where price sits in its base, how fresh the breakout is, how the stock ranks against the market, volume behaviour, moving-average health and momentum — into a single 0-100 rating with grades A to D. The component breakdown is visible in each score card. Weights are heuristics, not independently validated probabilities; A is the strongest technical fit, B developing, C a watchlist name, D not yet a star.

What exactly is the pivot level?

The pivot is the top of the detected consolidation base — the resistance the breakout must clear. The engine walks back through daily candles to locate the current advance and takes the preceding base window's highest high. When that pivot also clears the 6-month or 52-week high, the breakout carries multi-month significance and scores higher.

Which does the tool highlight — the base or the breakout?

The radar tracks both stages: the Quality Coil screens show leaders still pressing inside their base, while Post-Breakout Leaders and Fresh Breakouts show names that have recently cleared their pivot. The Extended phase marks stocks already far above their launch pad. Which stage suits your strategy is for you to study and decide — the tool simply labels where each stock stands.

What does the contraction ratio mean?

Contraction compares recent daily ranges (ATR) against the base's average. A ratio of 0.8× or lower means volatility has compressed to a coil — the classic pre-breakout squeeze. Contraction describes the base and does not establish the direction or size of the next move.

Does a high StarScore guarantee a multibagger?

No. Stars measures how closely a stock currently matches the multibagger template — it is a research filter, not a promise and not a recommendation. It is for education and information only; JustTicks is not a SEBI-registered adviser, so verify anything here independently and consult a registered professional before investing.

Multibagger radar for consolidation breakouts

JustTicks Stars scans daily candles across the NSE universe for stocks matching the multibagger template: a tight multi-month consolidation, an unusual volume increase, a close above the base pivot, and a subsequent higher-high / higher-low expansion.

Each stock receives a StarScore from 0 to 100 built from base quality, volume footprint, breakout freshness, moving-average alignment, RSI momentum and market structure. Prebuilt screens separate fresh breakouts, coiled anticipation candidates and confirmed trends.
