Earlier breakouts

Replay one session with the selected timeframe, segment and breakout settings.

Success means the 1R target was reached before the stop or a close back inside the band. Entry is a later break of the setup high/low; gaps fill at the open. If a candle could hit both stop and target, the stop is assumed first. Each event is independent; fees and slippage are excluded.

All times are IST candle starts. “Known at” is when the breakout candle closed. Trigger and exit times identify the candle, not the exact tick. Replay runs only when requested.

01

Compress

Bandwidth shrinks into its bottom percentile as volatility coils inside the bands.

02

Break the band

A candle closes outside the band with the selected minimum directional body. Volume contributes to quality.

03

Confirm with a later candle

The setup never confirms itself; a later candle must trade beyond its extreme.

04

Invalidate cleanly

Any close back inside the band ends the walk; the basis anchors the stop.

Screener methodology

What the Bollinger Band Breakout Screener is designed to find

This is a two-sided volatility-expansion screener for traders who require confirmation after price leaves its statistical envelope. Bands are built on an SMA basis with population deviation and the bandwidth percentile ranks compression against recent history. The engine separates the break event from the entry event: a later candle must clear the breakout extreme, and any close back inside the band ends the structure. Squeeze coils surface before the break with the band edge armed as the trigger and the basis as the stop. RSI, MACD, EMA alignment and ADX/DMI are scored in the setup direction without replacing price and volume.

Signal definition

The engine treats a close outside the Bollinger band as the reference event: above the upper band for a long, below the lower band for a short. The move must also clear the selected directional body threshold.

Confirmation rule

The breakout candle cannot confirm itself. A long confirms only when a later candle trades above its high; a short confirms only when a later candle trades below its low. Armed means that edge remains unbroken.

Quality model

Quality combines breakout RVOL, body expansion, distance beyond the band, squeeze-primed compression, freshness, prior-day level confluence and side-aware RSI, MACD, EMA 9/21/50 and ADX/DMI alignment.

Risk framework

Long invalidation uses the higher of the breakout candle low and the band basis; short invalidation uses the lower of the candle high and the basis. Squeeze coils enter at the band edge with the basis as the stop. Stops are widened when needed to a minimum 0.1% risk; targets use that same risk at 1R and 2R.

How to read the tableExecution-focused meaning of the most important columns

Prioritize fresh, liquid breaks where price is close to the trigger, RVOL supports the expansion, trend factors agree, and the planned stop fits your risk budget.

Signal StateBreaking is a fresh close outside the band; Armed awaits continuation; Walk rides the band; Coil is pre-breakout.
Break TimeLater trigger candle start in IST; not an exact tick time. The setup time identifies the earlier band-break candle. Pending means its extreme is intact.
QualityA+/A ranks the strongest multi-factor alignment; it is not a return forecast.
Last PriceLatest completed candle close with its percentage change from the prior daily close shown below.
Band BasisThe SMA basis of the band — the mean price the whole structure revolves around.
%B LocationWhere price sits inside the band: 0 at the lower band, 100 at the upper, beyond when outside.
BandwidthBand width as a share of the basis with its rolling percentile — the squeeze dial.
RSI 14Wilder RSI momentum, scored in the correct directional zone for long or short continuation.
TrendComposite 0–100 alignment of RSI, MACD, EMA 9/21/50 and ADX/DMI.
To TriggerDirection-normalized distance to the monitored edge. Smaller positive values are nearer.
Setup RVOLBreakout-candle volume versus its trailing candle baseline.

Market noteA close outside the band is a volatility event, not a promise of direction. Walks fail when price closes back inside; failed breaks often mean-revert to the basis. Market regime, liquidity, spread and nearby structure still matter before every execution.

Bollinger band breakout screener

The Bollinger Band Breakout Screener identifies NSE stocks closing outside their Bollinger bands, riding band walks after confirmed breaks, or coiling inside compressed bandwidth. Bands are computed on an SMA basis with population deviation, and every signal carries %B, bandwidth percentile and a side-aware trade plan.

Check whether the break came out of a squeeze, whether relative volume supports the expansion, and how far price sits from the trigger edge. Failed breaks tend to mean-revert to the basis, so the invalidation is always defined before entry. Band math uses multi-session history so compression ranks are comparable across the tape.

What is a Bollinger Band breakout?

A candle closing outside the upper or lower Bollinger band — an envelope set a fixed number of standard deviations around a moving-average basis. A close outside marks price expansion relative to its recent rolling history; the bands do not imply a fixed probability. The reverse — a close back inside — is the mirror signal that the expansion has failed.

What is a Bollinger Band squeeze?

A period when bandwidth — the distance between the bands relative to the basis — compresses into the bottom of its recent range. Volatility is mean-reverting, so compression frequently precedes expansion. This screener ranks bandwidth against its rolling percentile so coils are surfaced before the break, with the band edge armed as the trigger.

What is %B and how do I use it?

%B locates the latest close inside the band: 0 at the lower band, 100 at the upper band, and values beyond 100 or below 0 when price closes outside. Readings pinned beyond the band with a rising bandwidth percentile identify walking bands — persistent expansions — while values oscillating through 50 describe a range rotating around the basis.

Why does this screener require a later candle to confirm?

The breakout close itself is the signal event, but the setup candle can never confirm itself. Only a later candle trading beyond the breakout candle's extreme turns the break into a walk. This look-ahead-safe sequencing filters one-candle pokes that immediately close back inside the band, which are the most common false signals.
