Futures buildup heatmap for the whole F&O universe

The Futures Buildup Heatmap colours contracts by their price-and-OI classification, making it easier to compare positioning patterns across the displayed universe. It complements a filtered screener by showing several states together.

Compare the same timeframe and expiry, and open individual contracts to check volume and price structure behind a colour change. Long buildup and covering are conventional labels, not direct records of trade intent. Similar states across a sector can inform breadth analysis without establishing that the pattern will persist.

How do you read a futures buildup heatmap?

Each tile is one futures contract, colored by the combination of its price change and open-interest change: green for long buildup, red for short buildup, blue for short covering and orange for long unwinding (color settings are shown in the legend). Scan for clusters — a whole sector in one color is a positioning story; a lone contrarian tile inside a cluster is the anomaly worth investigating.

What is the difference between long unwinding and short buildup?

Both show falling prices, but the OI direction separates them: in short buildup open interest rises (new shorts being created), while in long unwinding open interest falls (existing longs exiting). Short buildup can feed a trend; long unwinding often precedes exhaustion of an uptrend. The heatmap tracks both because their trading implications are opposite.

How many contracts can the buildup heatmap show?

Up to 30 futures contracts simultaneously, covering NSE indices, stocks and MCX commodities, so a full market positioning picture fits on one screen without pagination.

Is the buildup heatmap available for historical dates?

Yes — historical mode replays the same color-coded buildup states for any past trading session, which is useful for studying how positioning shifted across an event day, a gap open or an expiry.
