Understanding Harmonic Patterns

Harmonic patterns are geometric price formations that use Fibonacci ratios to identify potential reversal points in financial markets. These patterns help traders identify high-probability trading opportunities with defined entry, stop loss, and target levels.

Pattern Types & Characteristics

Gartley

The Gartley pattern is a retracement pattern that occurs after a significant move. It indicates potential continuation of the original trend.

AB_XA:0.618
BC_AB:0.382-0.886
CD_BC:1.272-1.618
XA_AD:0.786
Most reliable harmonic pattern, forms after a strong trend

Butterfly

The Butterfly pattern is a reversal pattern that forms at the end of a trend. Point D extends beyond point X, creating an extreme level.

AB_XA:0.786
BC_AB:0.382-0.886
CD_BC:1.618-2.618
XA_AD:1.27
High risk/reward reversal pattern with D extending beyond X

Bat

The Bat pattern is a precise harmonic pattern with specific Fibonacci ratios. Point D is a more shallow retracement than other patterns.

AB_XA:0.382-0.5
BC_AB:0.382-0.886
CD_BC:1.618-2.618
XA_AD:0.886
Shallow retracement pattern with excellent risk/reward

Crab

The Crab pattern is considered the most precise harmonic pattern with the most extreme potential reversal zone.

AB_XA:0.382-0.618
BC_AB:0.382-0.886
CD_BC:2.618-3.618
XA_AD:1.618
Extreme reversal pattern with D at 161.8% of XA

Deep Crab

The Deep Crab is similar to the Crab but has a different B point retracement, making it more aggressive.

AB_XA:0.886
BC_AB:0.382-0.886
CD_BC:2.618-3.618
XA_AD:1.618
Aggressive pattern with deep B retracement at 88.6%

Cypher

The Cypher pattern has a unique structure where point C extends beyond point A.

AB_XA:0.382-0.618
BC_AB:1.272-1.414
CD_BC:0.786
C extends beyond A, creating a distinct formation

Shark

The Shark pattern is an emerging pattern that forms before the completion of the XABCD structure.

AB_XA:0.886-1.13
BC_AB:1.13-1.618
CD_BC:1.618-2.24
Emerging pattern with targets at 88.6-113% of XA

5-0

The 5-0 pattern is a neutral pattern that doesn't predict direction. It requires the 5-point validation.

AB_XA:1.618-2.24
BC_AB:1.618-2.24
CD_BC:0.5
Neutral pattern requiring 5-point validation

Trading Strategy for Harmonic Patterns

Entry Rules

  • • Enter at PRZ (Potential Reversal Zone) at point D
  • • Wait for pattern completion (all 5 points confirmed)
  • • Look for reversal candlestick confirmation
  • • Volume spike at entry zone adds confidence

Exit Rules

  • • Target 1 (T1): 38.2-61.8% of CD (conservative)
  • • Target 2 (T2): 100% of CD (moderate)
  • • Target 3 (T3): 161.8% of CD (aggressive)
  • • Stop Loss: Below X (bullish) or above X (bearish)

Risk Management

  • • Look for R:R ratio of 2:1 or higher
  • • Position size based on SL distance
  • • Move SL to breakeven after T1 achieved
  • • Trail stop with 50% of profits after T2

Best Practices

  • • Trade only at key support/resistance levels
  • • Combine with other indicators (RSI, MACD)
  • • Higher timeframes (4H, Daily) are more reliable
  • • Avoid trading during major news events
